Significantly, documents smuggled out of Russia in the 1990s confirm that Soviet nukes were also the focus of UFO interest during the Cold War era. On one occasion, in October 1982, a number of missiles temporarily activated for launch, as terrified officers attempted to disrupt the unauthorized count-down. After 15 seconds, the anomaly terminated and the equipment returned to standby status. While this was taking place, an enormous disc silently hovered over the base. Robert Hastings really did his homework. His 500-page book was exhaustively researched over many years. The author interviewed 150+ USAF personnel, including officers as high as Colonel, who staffed various nuclear weapons research and storage facilities in N Mexico, Washington, South Carolina, Utah, Idaho, Washington and elsewhere, as well as ICBM bases (i.e., Warren AFB in Wyoming, Malstrom AFB in Montana, Minot AFB in N Dakota) who personally witnessed UFO visitations at these facilities. The number of incidents evidently is in the hundreds and goes back to the 1940s. Some of the stories are extraordinary. There were multiple cases where UFOs hovered over ICBM silos and shut down launch facilities, taking nuclear-armed missiles off line. There were even cases where UFOs interfered with ICBM launches. According to the author, in one such case, a UFO disabled an ICBM in mid-flight over the Pacific during a test launch from Vandenberg AFB, causing the dummy warhead to fall into the ocean hundreds of miles short of the target.
Although most of the official documentation remains classified to this day, the author did a nice job piecing the story together. It’s clear that Mr ET has a special interest in human-built nuclear weapons. This should give us pause. It's also apparent that the US military remains powerless to prevent the alien intrusions; which probably explains the official secrecy surrounding the ET issue.
I was especially intrigued by Hastings' book because my father (Col. John W. Gaffney) served for many years in the Air Force's Office of Special Investigations (OSI) which was often the lead agency that conducted the official UFO de-briefings and the investigative work. Although in my early years I poo-pooed the ET issue, in the mid-1990s I became more open-minded. As I studied the Roswell incident, I realized that the US government had implemented a cover up. At one point, while visiting my parents, I asked my my dad about Roswell. He went upstairs and came back down and showed me what looked like some aluminum foil. He told me it was a piece of the weather balloon that had been mistaken for a UFO at Roswell. I was astonished.
This, of course, was the official cover story which — it’s also clear — was a load of malarkey. There is no doubt that something real happened at Roswell which, let us recall, was just down the road from the US nuclear weapons testing site at White Sands, NM.
When my father retired from the Air Force in the late 1960s, he was the second ranking officer at OSI (under Gen. Joe Capucci). Did my father lie to me? My impression is that he did not. He seemed totally sincere. Assuming this is so, the conclusion is inescapable that despite his rank my father had not been briefed himself, probably because he did not have a need to know. Which goes to show that in the US military's compartmentalized world of classified knowledge, rank does not necessarily count.
I have had the privilege to meet personally, and several times, Robert Hastings. (It was in New Mexico 1988-1989).
"Reliable" is the first word which comes to my mind when I think of him.
I even relinquished my own 'Bougeur map' to him when I left the USA.
Mr. Hastings is from an old military family, and he has had many contacts with military personnel of US Missile Bases.
UFOs were closely related to the atomic/nuclear weapons facilities from the beginning, i.e. June of 1947, after the historic report from Kenneth Arnold.
In France we had the same observations when we had an underground ICBM Base in our southern mountains!
"UFOs & Nukes" is a mandatory reading for anyone who wishes seriously to have a working knowledge of the UFO Enigma.

Amazing, It's a must have book for researchers.
Very comprehensive collection of incidents between UFOs and nuclear weapons. Somewhat dogmatic as far as interpretation of events, but a good encyclopedia/compendium of these events.
Looking for first hand nuclear weapons related UFO accounts that have not been revealed before; that were told on the record by named U.S. veteran witnesses whose credentials, character, and testimonies were first checked and confirmed? Then this is a book for you.
Almost all of the information in UFO's & Nukes is revealed here for the first time, and happens to be a fascinating and well written read.
Other reviewers here rightly state that Hastings provides well researched information. Furthermore his reasoning in making sense of the information he's obtained, and how he decides which interviewees' accounts to include in his discussion is logical, temperate, and dispassionate. His attention to detail and his ability to fully consider the meaning of witness accounts or, equally, skeptics' refutations, allows him to posit not just reasonable summations but, too, sound rebuttals that frankly, moves the informed and studied discussion of UFO's, such as it is, forward.
Indeed, since the Air Force officers and scientists who wrote logically about UFO's between the 1950's and late 1970's (i.e. Ruppelt, Hynek, Valle, Michel, McDonald, Catoe, the Lorenzens, Saunders, Edwards, Fowler, etc.), sadly, in more modern decades, there has been fewer well researched logical and innovative studies written – but UFOS & Nukes shows serious research continues asking questions little studied before. It is a current, earnest, and reasonable consideration of what the UFO phenomenon might be or why it might be, given what UFO's have been witnessed doing near nuclear arms (in the U.S. and in other nations).
The information herein is to be included in the company of the professional, truthful, reasonable, logical, findings-based UFO body of research conducted in recent decades by the likes of Hynek, Rutledge, Sturrock, Imbrogno, and Kean, that adds to what we understand about UFO’s.
I recommend this book.
